Star power and sock hoppin’ from Ludacris to Chubby Checker will draw tens of thousands of people to the Mississippi Gulf Coast through October 8 during Cruisin’ the Coast week 2017. America’s Largest Block Party turns 21 as more than 8,000 expected classic cars and trucks join the celebration in cities all down the strip.
Alongside the coast-wide vintage car shows and socials, the Gulfport Music Festival will give visitors another huge entertainment option, with headliners including hip-hop star Ludacris and hard rockers 3 Doors Down. Here’s a quick guide to some of the hot spots this weekend.
Thursday, October 5
Register for official Cruisin’ the Coast events at one of ten official site locations from Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula, and head to the Manufacturers Midway and Swap Meet at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Browse the hot rods for sale at the Car Corral on Biloxi Beach just east of Treasure Bay before sampling live entertainment at D’Iberville Municipal Complex, one of seven venues along the coast featuring live music beginning at 11 a.m.
Grab fresh seafood with Gulf of Mexico views at endearing local spot McElroy’s Harbor House at Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, then cool off at Margaritaville Resort Biloxi’s rooftop pools for a family-fun experience. Make it to Second Street in Pass Christian to see cruisers rev into the red at Burn ‘Em Up in the Pass from 5-8 p.m.
Friday, October 6
Meet Courtney Hansen, star of the “Overhaulin’” and “Powerblock” TV series, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Coliseum. Next, see “My Classic Car” star Dennis Gage at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi from 2-4 p.m. While you’re there, shop for deals at the center’s famous and local boutiques, including American Eagle Outfitters, Bath & Body Works and Dillard’s.
The quaint, oak-shaded Ocean Springs downtown turns into an entertainment mecca at night. Be sure to swing by the Ocean Springs Sock Hop & Street Party from 5-9 p.m., where you can grab dinner, view classic cars and dance to live classic rock ‘n’ roll music. If you’re looking for an alternative, gates open at 4 p.m. at the Gulfport Music Festival, featuring hard rock headlined by locals-made-good 3 Doors Down (separate ticket needed).
Saturday, October 7
The fun reaches hot-rod heaven on Saturday, the peak day for checking out vintage rides and cruising the beach strip. Spend the day enjoying music, food and mingling at spots in Pass Christian, Gulfport and Pascagoula before catching the Street Rodder Road Tour at the IP Casino Resort in Biloxi from 6-9 p.m.
