National Travel & Tourism Week 2016

It’s National Travel & Tourism Week! America’s annual salute to travel and tourism was established by a congressional resolution in 1983, and we are celebrating all week with events at our 13 Welcome Centers around the state. Here are some highlights:

SUNDAY, MAY 1

ALCORN COUNTY

The first and last traveler of the day will receive a Mississippi poster.

DESOTO COUNTY

Light refreshments served to kick off National Tourism Week

HANCOCK COUNTY

Complimentary tea & coffee will be served and select tourists will receive a souvenir.

ITAWAMBA COUNTY

Refreshments served.

JACKSON COUNTY

Popcorn courtesy of MS Gulf Coast Regional CVB, served to visitors.

PIKE COUNTY

Mississippi information bags and cookies will be given to the tourist throughout the day. A lucky tourist will win a fudge tray.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Kick-off National Tourism Week/ Hotdogs and Hamburgers will be served to visitors. A Mississippi gift will be raffled off to a lucky visitor.

WOODVILLE

Lemonade & Cookies to be served to visitors. Giveaways during the day.

 

MONDAY, MAY 2

ALCORN COUNTY

Door prizes will be given out to travelers who sign in on the daily register sheet on the hidden designated line.

DELMA FURNISS

Door prizes will be randomly given to select travelers.

HANCOCK COUNTY

Pat Harrison Waterpark will serve hotdogs, chips and bottled water to tourist visiting the welcome center.

JACKSON COUNTY

LAUDERDALE COUNTY

Lauderdale County Homemakers’ Clubs will provide free refreshments for the traveling public.

PIKE COUNTY

Coloring books and pencils will be handed out provided by MDOT.

WARREN COUNTY/VICKSBURG

The staff from the Outlets at Vicksburg  will visit with the tourist and provide VIP shopping cards.  With stores offering shoes to perfume to the latest in children’s fashion and everything in between, you are sure to find what you are looking for at Outlets at Vicksburg. Margaret Gilmer, owner, will provide treats and door prizes.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Winterville Mounds State Park will be displaying camping and showing Indian artifacts of their museum.

WOODVILLE

Red Beans and Rice Monday. Visitors will be able to sample a local favorite. Dorothy McQuarter, local pinestraw basket maker will be demonstrating her basket making in the lobby.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 3

ALCORN COUNTY

Travel Rally Day – Display of Travel related items and special signage to appreciate travel and hospitality workers.  Handouts on tips for travel.  Michelle Williams, MDOT District 1 Anti-Litter Coordinator will be on hand to meet and greet guests and showcase the Anti-Litter display and hand out litter bags, coloring books, pencils, and activity sheets for the kids.

DELMA FURNISS

Visitors will have a chance to take a first hand look at the great things happening at the Grammy Museum. A representative will be at the welcome center to set up display showcasing the newly built Grammy Museum. Light r efreshments will be served.

HANCOCK COUNTY

Popcorn, compliments of Visit MS Gulf Coast tourism, will be served from 10am-3pm. Select visitors will receive a souvenir.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY

Pat Harrison Waterway promotion and cook out.

PIKE COUNTY

Dogwood Cross will provide entertainment, McComb Chamber, Magnolia Chamber, Osyka Red Hat Ladies, Osyka Civic Club and MDOT will promote Pike County and hand out goodies. Refreshments will be served.

WARREN COUNTY/VICKSBURG

Rowdy’s Family Restaurant will offer samples of Mississippi pond-raised catfish- fried, grilled, or blackened with original Johnny Sauce. Vicksburg’s favorite for over 50 years! Family restaurant concept set in old Vicksburg theme. “The Beatles Guy” Mr. Richard McComas will entertain the tourist with music.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Mars Food, formerly Uncle Ben’s ricewill be at the Welcome Center displaying rice products and giving samples to visitors. Wear red to celebrate tourism!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 4

ALCORN COUNTY

It’s National Tourists Appreciation Day.  The first traveler of the day that signs in on the daily register will receive a basket of assorted Mississippi Specialty Items.   The Alcorn Welcome Center will be giving out specialty door prizes. Festivities will start at Noon – 1:00p.m, with light refreshments served throughout. Tony Bullard, a local artist, will be on hand to meet and greet guest and showcase several of his latest paintings of historic places in Corinth and the surrounding area towns.

DELMA FURNISS

Tutwiler Quilters / Tourist Appreciation Day – Th is event will take place from 11:00 a .m. – 2:00 p.m. We will play music throughout the welcome center and serve refreshments.

DESOTO COUNTY

Tourist Appreciation Day from 11am to 1pm. We will have the DeSoto County mayors, DeSoto County chambers, DeSoto County Tourism, hotels and locals here to spread the word. Food and Drink provided by the Welcome Center Staff.

HANCOCK COUNTY

Hancock County Day: 10am-1pm. The day’s events will feature area tourism partners, such as Hancock County Tourism Bureau, Diamondhead Country Club and POA, Mississippi Gulf coast Retired Senior Partnership. Silver Slipper Casino, Tony’s Restaurant, Dempsey’s Restaurant, Cuz’s Restaurant, Claiborne Hill Supermarket, and Bay Hideaway Campground, (to name a few) will join the staff in welcoming tourists to the area.

JACKSON COUNTY

Popcorn courtesy of MS Gulf Coast Regional CVB, served to tourists. Banana’s Mini Golf & Arcade and Feel The Freeze Yogurt Shop- Gulfport. Snappers Restaurant, Biloxi serving food samples.

THURSDAY, MAY 5

ALCORN COUNTY

Random Door Prizes will be given out to travelers that sign the daily register sheet on the hidden designated line.

DELMA FURNISS

Visitors will be given the opportunity to compete to complete different Mississippi Puzzle Trivia to win door prizes.

HANCOCK COUNTY

Harrison County Day: 10am-1pm, local casinos, restaurants, hotels and area attractions will join welcome center staff in welcoming tourists to our area with special treats.

ITAWAMBA COUNTY

Crossroads Pottery & Master Gardeners, 11 am to 1 pm.

JACKSON COUNTY

Popcorn courtesy of MS Gulf Coast Regional CVB, served to tourists. Gulf Islands Waterpark-Ocean Springs, Scranton Nature Center-Pascagoula (with a rabbit or a snake) Gulf Hills Resort and Golf Club-Ocean Springs with a mini putting green.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY

Old fashioned lemonade will be served on the porch while local artist, Sandra McMullen and Jack Harris along with their friends, provide musical entertainment on the front lawn of the welcome center.

PIKE COUNTY

Hampton Inn of McComb will greet tourist and hand out cookies. Pat Harrison Waterway will promote our parks. They will serve hotdogs and water to visitors.

FRIDAY, MAY 6

ALCORN COUNTY

Door prizes will be given out to travelers who sign in on the daily register sheet on the hidden designated line.

DESOTO COUNTY

Staff will give out specialty items to the tourists as a token of our appreciation.

JACKSON COUNTY

Popcorn courtesy of MS Gulf Coast Regional CVB, served to tourists. Jackson County Chamber with Jackson County businesses. Hampton Inn- Ocean Springs. Snappers Restaurant, Biloxi serving food samples. John and Mabel with the Retiree Partnership.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY

Meridian/Lauderdale County tourism Day. Local Attractions will be highlighted in a special display and free cake will be provided.

PIKE COUNTY

McComb Recreation will serve popcorn and hand out goodies to the tourist. Bubba Roberts of Osyka will provide entertainment with his Harmonica.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Mississippi items will be given to visitors.

WOODVILLE

Staffers will serve cookies and lemonade throughout day. Mississippi blues music to be played throughout day.

SATURDAY, MAY 7

ALCORN COUNTY

Travel Information bags will be available with travel and packing tips which will also include the new Daily Corinthian 2016 Summer Dine & Entertain in the Crossroads publication.  The dining guide has menus and several coupons inside. Mississippi Specialty Items gift basket will be given out to the last tourist of the day to sign the register.

DELMA FURNISS

A PowerPoint video from the week of activities will be place on display in lobby for guests to view. Light refreshments will be served .

DESOTO COUNTY

Gold Wings Road Riders Association will be onsite from 11am to 1pm to give visitors and the public instructions on all they need to know about motorcycles from safety to riding and being visible on the road.

HANCOCK COUNTY

Cake & tea will be served.

ITAWAMBA COUNTY

Roots of Elvis Fan Club & Natchez Trace Parkway, from 9 am to 11 am.

JACKSON COUNTY

Popcorn courtesy of MS Gulf Coast Regional CVB, served to tourists. Gulf Islands National Seashore-Ocean Springs. Busted Wrench-Gulfport free automobile museum.

PIKE COUNTY

David Brewer of Summit will provide entertainment with country and gospel songs. Cookies will be served.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Mississippi Specialty items will be given to tourists as this is the last day of National Tourism and Travel. Max and Erma’s restaurant refreshments will be on display.

WOODVILLE

Lemonade and cookies served throughout the day.

 

SUNDAY, MAY 8

HANCOCK COUNTY

Complimentary chocolate and Mother’s Day card to all mothers from 10am-1pm.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY

Mothers’ Day promotions will be given away.
