Roméo et Juliette: Gounod’s Masterpiece

Saturday, May 2, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.
Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center • 64 Homochitto St.
Admission: $35

We open our 30th Anniversary season with this Grand French Opera composed by Charles Gounod, based on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy.

Starring the vocal talents of Stacey Trenteseaux, Eric Botto, Andre Chiang, Kimberly Sogioka, Michael Nansel, and Luke Scott.
Directed by Patrick Jacobs and conducted by Dr. Jay Dean.

Verona is torn apart by the bitter feuding of the Capulet and Montague houses. In the midst of this strife and ongoing conflict, Roméo, a Montague, and Juliette, a Capulet, fall passionately in love with each other. The young lovers exchange secret vows, but within hours a fight has broken out between the two families. Seeking to avenge the death of his friend, Mercutio, Roméo challenges Tybalt, the nephew of Count Capulet, to a duel and kills him. Roméo is exiled by the duke. Juliette plans with Frère Laurent to fake her death with a sleeping potion to avoid marrying Pâris. Roméo, having not received the Frère’s message explaining the plan, secretly returns and thinking Juliette truly dead, kills himself before discovering the truth.

This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
