Mississippi Football Weekend Guide

From college-town traditions to tailgate food, local bars, boutique stays, and game-day detours, this guide helps travelers turn a Mississippi football weekend into a full getaway.

In Mississippi, a football game is rarely just a football game.

It can start with breakfast downtown, continue beneath a tailgate tent for most of the afternoon and end with live music, local food and an entire town still buzzing long after the final whistle. From Ole Miss and Mississippi State to Southern Miss and Jackson State, each college town brings its own traditions, flavors and game-day personality.

The trick is not simply buying a ticket. It is turning Saturday into a full Mississippi weekend.

Oxford: Tailgate in The Grove

Few places embrace game day quite like Oxford.

On Ole Miss weekends, the center of gravity shifts toward The Grove, where tailgating is known for elaborate setups, generous spreads and plenty of red and blue. From there, fans head to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for kickoff.

But make time for Oxford beyond campus. Arrive Friday and walk the Square, browse Square Books and have dinner at a local favorite such as City Grocery, Ajax Diner or Bouré.

For a stay with plenty of Oxford character, try The Oliver Hotel or Graduate Oxford, both convenient to downtown. Football weekends are among the city’s highest-demand periods, so Visit Oxford recommends booking well ahead and checking individual hotel minimum-stay requirements.

Sunday detour: Rowan Oak and a final stroll around the Square before heading home.

Starkville: Follow the Sound of the Cowbells

In Starkville, you will probably hear game day before you see it.

Mississippi State’s cowbell tradition follows fans from the Cotton District to The Junction and into Davis Wade Stadium. The Junction, directly across from the stadium, becomes the heart of the tailgate scene before kickoff.

Start in the Cotton District with food or drinks from spots such as Two Brothers Smoked Meats, Bulldog Burger Co. or Bin 612 before joining the crowd closer to the stadium.

For the overnight portion of the getaway, Hotel Chester brings historic character to downtown and puts restaurants, shops and entertainment within an easy walk.

Sunday detour: Take a quieter walk through downtown Starkville and stop for coffee before the drive home.

Hattiesburg: Southern Miss, Southern Food and Local Beer

Game day in Hattiesburg means black and gold, a chorus of “Southern Miss To The Top” and a trip to Renasant Stadium, better known as The Rock.

Make a weekend of it by exploring beyond campus. Hattiesburg has nearly 200 local dining options, with downtown favorites and craft-beer stops including Southern Prohibition Brewing, The Porter Public House and The Pullman.

For lodging, Hotel Indigo Hattiesburg is a boutique option close to Southern Miss, with design details inspired by the city’s timber, railroad and university history.

Sunday detour: Explore downtown, grab brunch or add a stop at the Hattiesburg Zoo before hitting the road.

Jackson: Football With a Soundtrack

A Jackson State game brings a different kind of energy to the weekend.

Along with the action on the field, the Sonic Boom of the South is a major part of the JSU experience, making music and pageantry as memorable as the game itself.

Build the rest of the weekend around Jackson’s neighborhoods. Fondren packs restaurants, coffee shops, bars, public art and local businesses into a compact district, making it an easy pre- or postgame stop.

For a stay with character, the Fairview Inn pairs historic surroundings with boutique accommodations.

Sunday detour: Spend the morning exploring Jackson’s museums, restaurants or public art before heading home.

Make the Weekend Bigger Than the Score

Mississippi football stretches beyond these four stops, too. Alcorn State in Lorman and Delta State in Cleveland each bring their own traditions to fall Saturdays.

Wherever you go, arrive early, stay late and leave room in the itinerary for the college town itself. The final score may be what brings you to Mississippi, but the tailgates, meals, music and local traditions are what turn game day into a getaway.
