Mississippi may have been the last state to repeal prohibition, but we’ve been making up for lost time. Check out some of the distilled spirits, beers, and other beverages crafted to perfection right here in the ‘Sip.’

The Cat’s Meow

Cathead Distillery, based in Jackson, Mississippi, is renowned for crafting exceptional spirits with a Southern flair. Their lineup includes award-winning vodka (including a range of flavored vodkas), gin, bourbon, chicory liqueur, and canned cocktails. The distillery was named a 2020 James Beard semi-finalist for Outstanding Spirits Producer. Cathead hosts occasional public events and has a bottle shop inside their facility offering product sales.

A Spirit of Wonder

Wonderbird Spirits, located near Oxford in the town of Taylor, distills three gins including traditional gins and an “experimental gin” that features the subtle essence of Mississippi magnolia blossoms. All of their gins are fermented using Delta grown jasmine rice. The distillery offers cocktail service, tours and tastings, Monday through Saturday by appointment.

The Need for Mead

Opened in 2016, Queen’s Reward is Mississippi’s first and only meadery. The Tupelo-based business makes their mead in small batches with 100% Mississippi honey. Samples are available in their tasting room and meads can be purchased by the bottle, as well. Frozen mead slushies, which blend their meads with fruits and other seasonal flavors, are also available. The meadery is open five days per week and hosts special events throughout the year.

Southern Suds

Lazy Magnolia is Mississippi’s oldest packaging brewery, opening their operations in 2005 in the community of Kiln. The brewery is best known for their original Southern Pecan nut brown ale but today sells a variety of traditional, seasonal and specialty brews in select markets of 14 states. The Lazy Magnolia taproom offers nine of their beers on tap with and hosts trivia nights and other public events on “the porch” each month. Private brewery tours can be booked seven days or more in advance.

Biloxi Brews

Coastal Mississippi’s newest brewery, Fly Llama, produces a range of beers made from regionally sourced ingredients. The company’s founder is one of only 28 Master Cicerone certified brewmasters in the world, in recognition of extraordinary brewing knowledge and expertise. The Fly Llama taproom features 32 beers, seltzers and non-alcoholic beverages on tap.

River City Refreshment

Located in the heart of Vicksburg’s downtown, Key City Brewing Co. combines a full-service restaurant with a 15-barrel brewhouse located next door. Twenty beers are available on tap, including gluten-reduced options, at Key City’s eatery. The brewery’s core beers are also available at restaurants and retailers around Jackson and Vicksburg.

Hops in the Hub City

Southern Prohibition, a.k.a. “SoPro” is a Hattiesburg craft brewery that began as a production in 2013. In 2021, SoPro added an on-site taproom and eatery. Currently, the brewery distributes their products to five states and offers a variety of seasonal and specialty brews in their taproom. The taproom has indoor and outdoor seating and is open five days per week.

Island Inspired

Chandeleur Island Brewing Company is located in a historic building in downtown Gulfport, where you’ll find their brewing operations and a taproom serving a variety of their beers plus cocktails, wine and food. The company donates a portion of proceeds from sales of select beers to support philanthropic programs including hammerhead shark tracking research, tarpon tagging, and Mississippi Aquarium conservation projects.
