Whether you’re hunting white-tailed deer, feral hogs, rabbits, or quail, Visit Mississippi knows the best spots for hunting and is here to bring you up to speed on the rules, regulations, and licensing requirements.

Hunting Licenses, Rules, and Regulations

As with any hunting ground, there are specific rules and regulations to always adhere to, as well as licenses you’ll need to have on hand before you trek onto state game lands. Before obtaining your hunting license, you’ll need to complete the Hunter Education Course through the state of Mississippi. Once you’ve earned your certificate of completion, you can purchase a non-residential hunting license.

There are several zones dedicated to deer hunting, and restrictions pertaining to the kind of rifle or bow you can use will depend on the game you’re hunting. Visit the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) for a full rundown of all regulations.

Popular Hunting Grounds

Thanks to the many naturally occurring biomes found in Mississippi, there are some great hunting grounds scattered throughout the Magnolia State. Many of them are home to multiple types of game and offer excellent fishing spots, as well. Some popular Mississippi hunting spots include:

Delta National Forest

Delta National Forest has an impressive 60,00 acres of land. While many visit this national forest for its abundance of fishing spots, it is one of the most popular hunting spots in Mississippi, as well. Here, you can expect to find deer, turkey, and other small game native to the forest.

St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge

With over 24,000 acres of forest, this is one of Mississippi’s biggest national wildlife refuges. Year after year, hunters report that this location is great if you’re looking specifically for waterfowl.

Homochitto National Forest

Located in Southwest Mississippi, Homochitto National Forest clocks in at a whopping 191,839 acres of forest, making it one of the largest national forests in the state. You’ll find a excess of turkey and other small game, and this is one of the few places in Mississippi that allow dog hunting with the correct permits.

Hunting Season and Bag Limits

There are some considerations to be made when certain game is in season. Overall, the hunting season runs from early October to late January or early February. Depending on the week, certain guns might be prohibited, or the size of the game might make it ineligible for bagging. Additionally, there are bag limits on how much game you can bring home in a day and throughout the entire season. Find more information from MDWFP.
